'Nightline' experiments with new formula for news - The Boston Globe - Boston.com - Media - A&E

'Nightline' experiments with new formula for news - The Boston Globe - Boston.com - Media - A&E: "In the end, though, the quality of the journalism might not matter. The network model for delivering news might not work anymore. Who thinks about the news at 11:35 p.m.? Or 6:30 p.m., when cable systems, websites, and younger, hipper alternatives like Stewart beckon around the clock?

What is probably needed is a television alternative to National Public Radio, with its large core audience of listeners who rally to NPR's intelligent and engagingly produced programs. But neither the networks nor PBS, with the Jim Lehrer snoozefest as its signature program, seem designed to provide NPR-type programming for TV."
